Cook the Kit, Lord of the Gourd, and more at the library this month! There’s lots to do at Chippewa River District Library. Here's a look at this month's event calendar. All events are free but registration is required for some events.

Cook the Kit – Spaghetti Squash
August 1, 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Mount Pleasant Farmers Market, Island Park
Embark on your family-friendly edible adventure when you visit Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market this summer and pick up your own free Cook the Kit. Each Cook the Kit includes: A featured farm-fresh recipe, pantry ingredients, and a voucher to purchase your farm-fresh produce ingredients at the farmers' market. Registration Required.
 
Lord of the Gourd: Watermelon Carving
August 24, 9 a.m., Corner of Broadway and Main Streets
Watch the "Lord of the Gourd" carve watermelons during For Art's Sake Kid's Market. Patrick Harrison, known as "Lord of the Gourd," has been carving pumpkins, watermelons, and gourds for over 20 years. His carving techniques are sure to inspire future carvers! Stop by his demonstration table and enter to win one of his completed melons. You must be present at NOON to win.

True Crime Club: Dissecting Anatomy of a Murder
August 4, 6 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library
Join us for an engaging, lighthearted discussion of this fascinating, yet disturbing genre. We focus our discussion around uplifting and empathizing with the victims of these crimes.
We will be reading "Dissecting Anatomy of a Murder" by Eugene Milhizer.

Author Visit: Eugene Milhizer
August 7, 6 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library
Meet the man behind the book that carefully and intelligently unravels the trial, book and movie based on the most famous criminal trial of the 20th century. Milhizer’s book examines and analyzes – it dissects, if you will – Anatomy of a Murder in significant detail.  It tells the fascinating story of its author, John Voelker.  It recounts the 1952 murder in Big Bay, Michigan, and community attitudes about the crime.
 
Brown Bag Book Discussion Group

Join us for our noon time book discussion. This month we will be discussing Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes. Feel free to bring your lunch.
 
 
Fun for Teens
CRDL Teen RGP Camp
August 12-14, 12:30 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library
Teens can explore their love of role-playing games at the Veterans Memorial Library. Designed to be a great place to start for the beginning player, we'll have pre-made characters for Dungeons & Dragons play and additional RPG-related activities. More advanced players are welcome to join us as we explore the world where storytelling meets gameplay. You will want to take advantage of every moment of this fantastic three-day RPG camp! Gaming is for students entering grades 8 & up. Registration is required.
 
Middle School Reading Masters
August 15, 5 p.m., Veterans Memorial Library
This month we will be meeting On Zoom for a lighthearted book discussion. This month we will be meeting in person for a pizza party followed by a lighthearted book discussion and serving pizza to participants who join us in person. Join us as we read Daughters of the Deep by Rick Riordan. Registration is required.

Storytime at the Park

Babies to preschoolers will enjoy stories, songs, and dancing while building vital early literacy skills! This storytime is for children ages 0 to 5. Join us this summer for storytime at Island Park during the Mt. Pleasant Farmer's Market! Look for us near the west shelter. Please bring blankets or chairs to sit on.

While you're out and about this summer, you can still sing, talk, read, write, and play with your baby! This kit has simple tools, games, and ideas to help you connect with your little one and build early literacy skills. Please register only once per family.

Join us for a special program just for preschool and early elementary families! You'll receive a FREE copy of that month's picture book and a simple craft kit to complete together. Registration required.

A monthly book club for upper elementary students! This month we will be meeting in person for a pizza party followed by a lighthearted book discussion. Join us as we read and discuss The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Grades 3 - 5 recommended. Registration required.

Isabella Citizens for Health
Mondays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
A Community Health Worker is knowledgeable about area service organizations and resources that help improve difficult situations, provide access to basic needs, and minimize or eliminate barriers to an improved quality of life. CHW’s can assist you in health insurance enrollment, transportation assistance, housing resources, and more.
