Position Title ASSISTANT MANAGER / ACCOUNTING SERVICES
Position Summary Responsible for accounting matters that arise in the absence of the Associate Controller/Financial Accounting in Accounting Services and supports a wide range of accounting functions and operations related to all funds. Assists in the establishment or revision of major objectives and policies in the area of financial accounting, coordinates SAP training for user departments and provides supervision over assigned accountant positions.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting or related field.
Three years experience of a qualifying nature with fund accounting, computerized accounting systems, and PC software applications.
Supervisory experience.
Strong Accounting and/or Auditing experience.
Experience with SAP or other integrated enterprise accounting systems.
Ability to project a positive attitude.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience with group presentations.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Accounting and/or Certified Public Accountant.
Experience in higher education environment.
Experience with university fund accounting and GASB.
Experience with tax compliance.
Experience with SAP Report Writer/Painter or other integrated accounting system reporting tool.
Experience with grant accounting and clinical research grant accounting.
Experience developing course materials and executing training initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities Responsible for matters that arise in the absence of the Associate Controller/Financial Reporting.
Supervises staff responsible for various university accounting functions as assigned.
Ensures integrity of university financial records and maintains university internal controls, including recommending related policies and procedures.
Maintains compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and other applicable accounting regulations/standards.
Researches and oversees implementation of new accounting standards.
Oversees tax compliance and reporting.
Prepares quarterly budget, actual and projection data reporting for distribution to VP for FASAVP for FSR, Vice Provost and budget office, including variance analysis.
Prepares university financial statements as assigned, including Management Discussion and Analysis and footnotes for the annual university external audits.
Prepares State of Michigan Financial Reporting (SOMACFR).
Oversees accounting responsibilities for NCAA Division I annual reporting.
Responsible for responding to other accounting related audits and reporting requests as assigned.
Maintains and ensures the integrity of the financial accounting system SAP master data.
Creates and maintains financial reports and related data structures in SAP.
Responsible for overseeing SAP financial system training program for campus.
Manages other special projects as assigned.
